Arbor Day
Arbor Day is nationally recognized and encourages tree planting and care. The town’s annual event began in 2007 and treats the public to a day of education, environmental awareness and family-fun activities.
The 2008 event featured Mr. Ken Gregory, former head of the town’s Department of Public Works for 16 years, who explained the importance of trees and engaged even the youngest of attendees. Students participated in a poster contest and attendees competed in a wiffle ball Home Run derby, a tree identification contest and enjoyed a Moonwalk and free popcorn and hot dogs. The Commission also handed out seedlings and planted a tree on the borough property.
This year, the “Great Lawn” came alive with ARBOR DAY festivities on Saturday, April 25, 2009 from 9 am to 12:30 pm. Lorraine Konopka, a Morris County arborist, helped plant a silver leaf maple in front of the Municipal building. Volunteers from the Madison Area YMCA, Morris Center YMCA and Little Duck Day School entertained the kids with wiffle ball, kick ball and soccer. Guest speaker Donna Massa, Executive Director of the New Jersey Shade Tree Federation, announced plans to work with the One Day One School program launched in Florham Park that is now nationwide.
